Young Progressive Democrats

The Young Progressive Democrats were the youth wing of the Irishpolitical party, the Progressive Democrats. Weakened after the party's poor showing in the 1997 elections, they were completely reformed on a national basis after the 2002 general election. A special conference of the Young Progressive Democrats (YPD)^[1] was held in party headquarters on 18 October 2008. This was in response to the announcement of the Parliamentary Party interest in winding up the Progressive Democrats Party. At this special conference the Young Progressive Democrats agreed to formally dissolve the Young Progressive Democrats following the same timetable as the Progressive Democrats for dissolving. A November 2008 special congress of the Progressive Democrats resolved that the party should come to an end; it was officially dissolved on 20 November 2009. By this action the Young Progressive Democrats also ceased to exist.

They had branches in Trinity College, Dublin, Dublin Institute of Technology, University College Dublin, Cork Institute of Technology and University College Cork. They also had a vibrant regional organisation in Dublin, Cork, Galway and the Mid West (Tipperary/Limerick/Clare) composed of young people who were not in college as well as the students from the Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick colleges.

They also had members from NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, Waterford IT, Mary Immaculate College, Griffith College Dublin and National College of Ireland.

The Young Progressive Democrats earned coverage in the national media in the past. In 2003 they received media attention after the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, was allegedly almost assaulted by protesters while trying to address the UCD branch of the Young Progressive Democrats.

The following September, a satirical leaflet produced by the Young Progressive Democrats that compared all of the political parties to pizzas was covered in the Sunday Independent.

En noviembre de 2005, unas declaraciones de la viceprimera ministra Mary Harney en un evento de las Juventudes Demócratas Progresistas del Trinity College de Dublín ocuparon la portada del Sunday Tribune . En ellas, Harney afirmaba que no tenía preferencia por formar parte del gobierno con Fianna Fáil o con Fine Gael.

En marzo de 2006, un taller de las Juventudes Demócratas Progresistas sobre el futuro del idioma irlandés recibió una amplia cobertura en los medios de comunicación en lengua irlandesa.

También han recibido una cobertura mixta por parte de la revista satírica política The Phoenix . Se publicaron dos artículos que destacaban las acaloradas disputas entre las regiones de Dublín y Cork del partido juvenil. Se publicó un perfil de "sangre joven" de la entonces presidenta Diane Duggan. En abril de 2006, The Phoenix publicó un artículo que detallaba cómo los Jóvenes Demócratas Progresistas habían lanzado con éxito una campaña para impedir que Ógra Fianna Fáil se convirtiera en miembro de la Juventud Liberal Europea .

Varios miembros de los Jóvenes Demócratas Progresistas se han postulado para cargos públicos tanto en elecciones locales como generales. Entre ellos se encuentran Jason O'Mahoney, Noelle Ryan, Bob Quinn, Paul McAuliffe , Ben Howe y Barry Saul.

Barry Saul fue el primer miembro del YPD en ejercer como representante público cuando fue cooptado al Consejo del Condado de Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown en 2003. Alan McGaughey (Presidente del YPD en 2002) fue posteriormente cooptado al Consejo del Condado de South Dublin en enero de 2008.

En las elecciones locales de 2009, Barry Saul (ahora FG) y Paul McAuliffe (ahora FF) fueron elegidos, respectivamente, para el Consejo del Condado de Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown y el Ayuntamiento de Dublín .

Los Jóvenes Demócratas Progresistas eran miembros de dos organizaciones juveniles internacionales:

• La Federación Internacional de la Juventud Liberal (IFLRY), que actúa como la organización juvenil de la Internacional Liberal .
• La Juventud Liberal Europea (LYMEC), que actúa como organización juvenil del Partido Liberal Demócrata y Reformista Europeo .
