Los Holothyrida son un pequeño orden de ácaros perteneciente al superorden Parasitiformes . No se conocen fósiles. Con longitudes corporales superiores a 2 mm ( 3/32 pulg .) , son ácaros relativamente grandes, con un cuerpo fuertemente esclerotizado . Se divide en tres familias: Allothyridae, Holothyridae y Neothyridae. En un estudio experimental de 1998, se descubrió que los miembros de la familia Allothyridae ignoraban a los animales vivos, pero se alimentaban fácilmente de los fluidos corporales de artrópodos muertos , lo que los convierte en carroñeros . [ 1 ]
Este orden tiene una distribución mayormente confinada a las antiguas masas continentales de Gondwana . Son el grupo hermano de Ixodida (garrapatas). [ 2 ]
