Hew Lorimer

Hew Martin Lorimer , OBE (22 de mayo de 1907 – 1 de septiembre de 1993) fue un escultor escocés .

Nació en Edimburgo , segundo hijo del arquitecto Sir Robert Lorimer . Estudió en la escuela Loretto de Musselburgh y luego en el Magdalen College de la Universidad de Oxford , pero abandonó Oxford prematuramente para estudiar diseño y escultura con Alexander Carrick en el Edinburgh College of Art . ^{[ 1 ]} Tras graduarse en 1934, comenzó su aprendizaje con el escultor y cantero Eric Gill . ^{[ 2 ]}

Lorimer fue principalmente escultor arquitectónico , y sus profundas creencias religiosas tuvieron un efecto duradero en su arte y en la temática de sus obras. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial , trabajó en numerosas esculturas de gran envergadura, entre ellas Nuestra Señora de las Islas , de 1958, una enorme estatua de granito de la madre y el niño ubicada en Rueval , en South Uist .

Entre 1950 y 1955 también esculpió la obra de arte que adorna la fachada de la Biblioteca Nacional de Escocia en Edimburgo, para la cual creó una serie de figuras altas y alegóricas que representan la historia , el derecho , la medicina , la música , la poesía , la ciencia y la teología . ^{[ 2 ]} El arquitecto de la biblioteca fue Reginald Fairlie , quien había sido aprendiz del padre de Lorimer, Robert. Lorimer talló las figuras directamente en la piedra en lugar de copiarlas de modelos de arcilla, una práctica conocida como talla directa . ^{[ 3 ]} También para Fairlie, Lorimer creó un enorme friso de tímpano que muestra a San Francisco regresando a Asís para The Friary en Dundee en 1959. ^{[ 4 ]}

One of Lorimer's final public commissions was the statue of Christ on the Cross for the University of Dundee Chaplaincy (1983, completed in 1986).^[5]

He was awarded an OBE in 1986 for services to architecture and conservation.

Hew was the nephew of the Scottish painter John Henry Lorimer^[2] and the grandson of Prof. James Lorimer, lawyer and academic.^[6] Lorimer lived in Kellie Castle in Fife, and died in a nursing home in St Andrews in 1993. He is survived by his sons, Robert and Henry, and daughter, Monica.

The castle is owned today by the National Trust for Scotland who maintain a changing exhibition of his works plus those of his father, Robert Lorimer, and his uncle, the painterJohn Henry Lorimer.
